The new Netflix series Grace and Frankie premieres May 8, and RumorFix caught up with star Lily Tomlin to get the inside scoop on what to expect.
The show follows long-time rivals Grace and Frankie, played by Jane Fonda and Tomlin, who are brought together after their husbands announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married.
“I play Frankie and Jane plays Grace and we are married to lawyers, Sam Waterston [who plays Sol] is my husband, Martin Sheen [as Robert] is hers — They’ve been lawyers together for 40 years and we’ve been married to them fr 40 years,” Lily explains. “We’ve been thrown together–Jane is kind of very republican and kind of more conservative. I am much more bohemian and I’m a pager– we don’t like each other but we’ve been together 40 years because of our husbands.”
But then the big bombshell drops when the foursome go to dinner together, with the ladies thinking their hubby’s are going to announce their retirement. “But they announce to us they’ve been having an affair for 20 years and that they’ve fallen in love and they want to get married now that they can. And so they just pull the rug out from under us, not without compassion, but a bit brutally for that kind of thing. And it’s all about how Grace and Frankie survive.”
Sounds like an extremely captivating show– we can’t wait!
On top of her new show, another congratulations is in order for Tomlin, who quite recently got married to her partner of 44 years, Jane Wagner. Switching gears from the show topic, Tomlin lights up when RumorFix mentions her recent nuptials. “We have a problem with Jane Fonda and Jane Wagner,” Lily giggles, “I call her [Jane Fonda] Fonda, and she calls herself Jane 2.”
Congrats on all your life endeavors, Lily!
