Seven years after being fired from ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy for using a homophobic slur against co-star T.R. Knight, Isaiah Washington will be making his return to the show this spring.
While it’s only for one episode, it’s to help in the medical drama’s send off to Sandra Oh’s character Dr. Cristina Yang as the actress’ 10 years on the show comes to an end.
“It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should,” show runner Shonda Rhimes said in a statement.
Washington’s character Dr. Preston Burke “is vital to that journey — he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”
GLAAD, the gay and lesbian media watchdog group, supports the decision to bring him back.
“His PSA and his statements promoting marriage equality in recent years have sent a strong message of support for LGBT people,” GLAAD said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing him return to one of our favorite shows, as well as in Patrik-Ian Polk’s moving film Blackbird about a young man coming out in a small Southern town.”
Knight ended up leaving the show several years after Washington’s termination.
