A whole generation of Americans grew up with the signature phrase "Goodnight John Boy."

It was from the iconic 1970s all Americana show The Waltons.

On Thursday, the patriarch of the clan, Ralph Waite, died at the age of 85 in the Palm Springs area.

John Boy, Richard Thomas, is all grown up at the age of 62 now and RumorFix got this exclusive statement from the actor:

'I loved Ralph very much. He was a fine and funny man with great social consciousness and a big heart. And he was one of the most uncompromisingly honest men and actors I've ever known -- a great example for a younger performer. Goodnight, Daddy."

Michael Learned, who played Ralph's wife, said she was "devastated" and called him an honest man and her " spiritual husband." Learned said in a statement, "We loved each other for over forty years. He died a working actor at the top of his game. He was a loving mentor to many and a role model to an entire generation."

Waite worked until last year when he appeared in NCIS and he also appeared in Bones and Days Of Our Lives over the past few years.

When I was a child I lived much as the Walton’s did. Southeastern Kentucky where the family has lived since 1790 in a triangle of valleys and everyone was a relative for like 20 miles. I so hate I could not bottle up that area into a time capsule to have keep it safe.
