When the legendary Aretha Franklin and the Rev. Al Sharpton took the podium at the BET Honors Awards Saturday night in Washington, D.C., we couldn’t stop ourselves by being amazed by the weight loss both of them have experienced in the past few years.
Sharpton admitted weighing 305 pounds at his peak — and now he is down to 138 pounds — that’s a weight loss of 167 pounds!
He recently told The Today Show how he did it: “I gave up meat, I started watching my diet, I work out.”
The Queen of Soul is more protective about her body transformation, but she does deny rumors that she had gastric bypass surgery. She said she started losing weight when she had an operation for an undisclosed illness and then she went on Jenny Craig and the pounds gradually came off.
In all, she says she’s lots 85 pounds.
The singer got RESPECT Saturday when she was honored by BET and given her award by Sharpton.
Other honorees included Motown founder Berry Gordy, rapper Ice Cube, photographer Carrie Mae Weems and American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault.
The event, which will be broadcast on BET on February 24, included performances by Jennifer Hudson, Smokey Robinson, Tamar Braxton, Janelle Monae and Mariah Carey.
