Irish hunk Colin Farrell has revealed he had a close relationship with Elizabeth Taylor during the last years of her life.
He told the story of their unusual friendship to Ellen DeGeneres on Monday’s episode of her talk show.
The 37-year-old said he met her manager at Cedars Sinai hospital while his son Henry was being born and Liz was there getting a stint put in her heart. He asked him to pass along his best wishes even though Liz may not have known who he was but the manager assured him she knew exactly who he was. The pair exchanged flowers a few days later and despite their 40-year age difference, a close friendship bloomed.
“I got to have an audience with her, and that was the beginning of a year and a half or two years of what was … it was kind of like the last, it feels like in my head, not her, I’m projecting, of romantic relationship I had,”
“She wasn’t much of a sleeper at night like I’m not,” he said. “I’d call her at two in the morning … and we’d talk for a half an hour, an hour into the wee hours. Really cool.”
While Farrell has never been married, Taylor was married eight times, but only had seven husbands. (She married Richard Burton twice) He told Ellen “I wanted to be number eight but we ran out of road.”
The Saving Mr. Banks star was so close to her he even read a poem at her March 2011 funeral.
“I just adored her. She was a spectacular, spectacular woman.”
