When E.L James announced Monday that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson are going to play the lead characters of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the movie adaptation of her super successful novel Fifty Shades Of Grey, many fans questioned the casting choices. But neither of the actors were the first choices for the parts.
A-list heartthrob Ryan Gosling was reportedly courted for the role but had no interest in playing Christian.
Gosling was the first choice of Universal Studios to play Christian Grey, but the Notebook heartthrob was — sadly — not interested in stripping for the steamy Fifty Shades of Grey role according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Tron star Garrett Hedlund was also a top choice and apparently was interested but didn’t want to commit to the film’s planned trilogy. Same goes for Twilight star Robert Pattinson, who already completed four Twilight movies and didn’t want to commit to another series of movies.
On the female side, The Descendants star Shailene Woodley was interested in the part of Anastasia but already had a packed schedule with her upcoming film Divergent.
Harry Potter’s Emma Watson made it known early on that she didn’t want anything to do with the movie, tweeting back in March “who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life.”
Elizabeth Olson and Imogen Poots were also said to be in the running for the role, which eventually went to Dakota Johnson.
