When E.L. James announced Monday morning that Dakota Johnson had been cast as literature student Anastasia Steele in the upcoming film adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey, it seems that the top internet question among the book’s fans was – who?
Johnson doesn’t have a long acting resume but is the daughter of two prominent actors – Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson (Miami Vice anyone?). And if she needs more acting tips she can always ask step-dad Antonio Banderas.
23-year-old Dakota was raised in Aspen, Colorado but became interested in modeling and acting as a teen.
She made her screen debut in 2010’s The Social Network opposite scenes with Justin Timberlake. She also appeared in the film 21 Jump Street.
Her first television role was in the 2012 Fox comedy Ben & Kate, where she played the title character of Kate. Unfortunately, that show was cancelled after one season.
Fifty Shades of Grey will be Dakota’s first film role as a lead actress.
Rumored frontrunners for the coveted role of Ana included Bleidel, Amanda Seyfried, Emily Browning, Lucy Hale and Emelia Clarke, with Bleidel seeming to be the fan favorite.
Dakota must have really nailed her auditions to convince director Sam Taylor-Johnson and author E.L. James that she was the one and only choice to play Anastasia.
