The Talk panelist Julie Chen revealed this week that she had plastic surgery to make her eyes look “less Asian” because of comments from her onetime news director as to why she would never get a chance at being a news anchor at the station.
And now the local NBC affiliate WDTN in Dayton, Ohio has issued an apology to the CBS talk and reality show host.
“We are sorry to hear about what happened to CBS’ Julie Chen in 1995 when she was a reporter at WDTN-TV,” said Joe Abouzeid, WDTN and WBDT president and general manager in a statement. “The station was under different management and ownership during that time. At WDTN and WBDT, we don’t tolerate racism or discrimination of any kind.”
Chen on Wednesday during the show’s “secrets revealed” week said that as a young reporter was told by her first boss that she had no opportunity to anchor the news at the Ohio station because she looked “too Chinese” and “because of your Asian eyes, I’ve noticed that when you’re on camera, you look disinterested and bored.”
And after a major TV agent backed up that same notion, Chen underwent eyelid surgery. She went on to add that after she did so, “the ball did roll for me, and I wondered, did I give into the man?”
