Dancing with the Stars is shaking things up for its 17th season, RumorFix has confirmed.
The show is being cut back to only Monday nights for two hours. Tuesday’s elimination show has been eliminated, ABC said in a press release on Thursday.
The new season begins September 16 and will combine the best elements of both nights including: competitive dance, group performances and musical guests, all climaxing to a dramatic elimination.
Each week a couple will be eliminated based on the judges’ scores from that night along with the public votes from the previous week.
While there have been rumors of a shakeup on the judge’s panel — RumorFix has confirmed all judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba are returning and, Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke-Charvet will continue to co-host the show.
Although professional dancer Derek Hough will host Family Dance Off on August 25, he recently told Access Hollywood that he’s returning to the dance competition this season and he likes the new format, “I think it’ll make a better show, more jam packed. And so I’m excited about it.”
We are also hearing that after missing two seasons of DWTS, Maks Chmerkovsiy may return to the ballroom. “Maks is part of the family,” ABC president Paul Lee recently told reporters at the Television Critics Association meeting. “He may well be back. We love having him be part of the show.”
And what about the cast? That’s top secret, but it appears Paula Deen and Geraldo Rivera have dropped out of the running.
Geraldo tweeted on Tuesday, “Honored to be asked to do DWTS. It’s a great show, enduring and energetic. Sorry Deena but can’t for lots of reasons including a bad foot Thx”
Both E! and Us reports Paula Deen was approached to do the show but turned it down.
The celebrity cast will be announced on September 4 on Good Morning America.
