The aliens attack Earth thriller Independence Day helped cement Will Smith’s status as a movie action hero, grossing nearly $817 million worldwide.
But he won’t be back for the movie’s sequel that’s due out in July of 2015. And it’s not because the actor’s not interested. He’s just too expensive to cast today!
Director Roland Emmerich told the New York Daily News that “Will Smith can not come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name, it would be too much.”
For the past decade, Smith’s price tag has run at approximately $20 million per movie.
Emmerich directed Smith in the 1996 blockbuster. He said the sequel will pick up 20 years after when the original ended. He’s open to bringing back original characters from the first Independence Day, including those played by Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum, but expects half the cast to be returning characters and the other half will be brand new roles.
