NBA veteran center Jason Collins made history this week by announcing in a Sports Illustrated cover story that he’s gay, becoming the first pro athlete of any major American team sport to do so. And The Mighty O just scored his first on camera interview.
Oprah Winfrey sat down with Jason and other family members for this Sunday night’s Oprah’s Next Chapter interview.
One of the first people the 34-year-old athlete came out to was his twin brother — and former NBA player — Jarron. And so much for twin telepathy. Jason said he told his brother he had something serious to tell him over breakfast one morning and in a very matter of fact tone said, “I’m gay.” Jarron said that after he took a moment to process the news his first reaction “was a stupid one. You’re gay? Since when?” and that in their 34 years of being close brothers he “never knew he [Jason] had an attraction to men.”
Jason revealed in the SI story that be came out to his brother last summer and that Jarron was accepting and “full of brotherly love.”
