Orlando Jones Not Replacing Tyler Perry In Madea Role

Former MADtv star Orlando Jones ruffled the feathers of Tyler Perry’s loyal fans when he announced on his Huffington Post blog on April 1 that he was taking over the role of Madea in future films revolving around the fictional pistol-packing grandma made famous by the beloved director.

The revelation was followed up by a press release that announced Orlando’s first appearance as Madea would be in the upcoming movie, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas. The press release even included a “quote” from Tyler citing his obligations to the OWN network (he signed a multi-year deal to create new scripted TV shows for the network last October) as the reason he was relinquishing the role of Madea to Orlando.

Orlando’s announcement was reported by numerous media outlets, but Tyler shut down the rumor in a text to the publisher of S2S magazine, saying, “That was an April Fool’s joke that HE did. Not true. And not funny.” Tyler added, “When I’m done with Madea, she is done.”
