RumorFix brings you a wrap up of the world of hip hop including — another season of Love & Hip Hop draws to a close, a Housewife finds out her marriage is kaput through the media, Rick Ross raps about slipping a woman a molly, and Lil Wayne reveals he’s epileptic.
Ratings Dip Not Enough To Stop Love & Hip Hop
Season Three of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop introduced an almost entirely new cast of characters. Newbies Jen “The Pen” Bayer, Raqi Thunda, Winter Ramos, Rashidah Ali, and Tahiry Jose joined show veterans Yandy Smith, Olivia Longott, and Erica Mena for a season of angry fights, tell-all books, and bisexual love triangles.
The unpredictable plots and story lines may have surpassed last season’s drama, but it wasn’t enough to match last season’s numbers in the ratings department. While Season Two consistently drew in over 2 million viewers each week (with episodes 17, 18, and 19 cracking the 3 million viewers mark), the current season delivered over 2 million viewers only three times since its January 7 premiere.
Despite the dip in numbers, a source tells me of at least one new face the show’s producers are considering adding to the mix next season. So hate it or love it, it appears to be no end in sight for Love & Hip-Hop. The Season Three finale episode airs Monday night at 8 pm.
Kordell Stewart ‘Un-wifes’ His Housewife
Kordell Stewart’s surprising decision to pull the plug on his marriage with his wife of nearly two-years, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Porsha Stewart, was one of the most talked about celebrity news stories of the week. The former NFL quarterback said the couple’s union was “irretrievably broken” in divorce papers filed on Friday, March 22, but according to her rep, Porsha didn’t find out until the media began reporting it on Monday morning. “Mrs. Stewart had held off on filing for a divorce herself and remained committed to the marriage because Mr. Stewart promised to work on the marriage with her,” a statement from Porsha’s camp claimed. “Instead, he misled her and she found out about the filing in the media.” Ouch!
Porsha is represented by Atlanta attorney Randall M. Kessler. “He filed a counter complaint on Friday asking for alimony and half of all Kordell’s property. Kessler is no stranger to family cases involving big name sports figures; he most recently represented Pamela Y. Smith, who last week withdrew her paternity suit against retired basketball great Michael Jordan.
Rapper Rick Ross Glorifying Date Rape?
Rick Ross ignited a storm of controversy last week because of his lyrics in a song titled “U.O.E.N.O.” The Maybach Music Group CEO collaborated with Atlanta rapper Rocko for the single, in which he talks about slipping an unsuspecting female a molly (a nickname for the purest form of MDMA – the main ingredient in ecstasy), and having his way with her. “Put molly all in her champagne/ She ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that/ She ain’t even know it,” raps Rick.
The song’s lyrics have attracted widespread criticism and severe backlash, with several petitions in protest of the track being launched. One in particular on Change.org demands “U.O.E.N.O.” be pulled from radio and a public apology from the Miami based rapper.
Feeling the heat brought on by his ill choice of lyrics, Rick was forced to address the controversy during an interview on New Orleans radio station Q93.3 on Wednesday night. Describing the situation as a “misunderstanding with a lyric”, the 37-year-old former correctional officer told the DJs, “I would never use the term ‘rape’ in my records and as far as my camp. Hip-hop don’t condone that, the streets don’t condone that, nobody condones that.” He added, “So I just wanted to reach out to all my queens that’s on my timeline, all the sexy ladies, the beautiful ladies that have been reaching out to me with the misunderstanding: We don’t condone rape, and I’m not with that.” Yes, nothing makes a woman feel sexier than talk of slipping her a molly and taking advantage of her.
Despite his mea culpa, the damage may have already been done. Many have vowed to no longer support Rick’s career, while WUVS-103.7 in Muskegon, Michigan has announced their decision to stop playing his music on their station.
Lil Wayne: “I’m An Epileptic”
Lil Wayne has revealed the health condition that landed him in the hospital after suffering multiple seizures earlier this month. In his first interview since his release from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the “No Worries” rapper told Power 106 In Los Angeles on Thursday night that he suffers from epilepsy. “The bad news is I’m an epileptic. I’m prone to seizures,” he explained. “This isn’t my first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh seizure. I’ve had a bunch of seizures, ya’ll just never hear about them.”
Reports that Wayne was at death’s door were vehemently denied by his camp during his hospitalization, but in his interview with Power, the 30-year-old hip-hop star admitted that his condition was so bad, he “could’ve died.” “This time it got real bad ’cause I had three of them in a row and on the third one, my heart rate went down to like 30 percent,” Wayne said. “Basically, I could’ve died, so that is why it was so serious. … But the reason being for the seizures is just plain stress, no rest, overworking myself. That’s just typical me though.”
Although Wayne’s fondness for “sizzurp”, a combination of cough syrup with codeine and soda or punch, is widely reported as the cause of his seizures and hospitalization, the issue isn’t addressed during his interview with Power. Disturbingly, Wayne makes multiple references to codeine in his latest album, I Am Not A Human Being 2
And that’s our hip hop roundup.
