Beloved former New York City Mayor Ed Koch has died at the age of 88. The former New York City Mayor, who hosted reality TV show The People’s Court in the 1990s, passed away at a hospital in the Big Apple on Friday after suffering congestive heart failure.

He served three terms as New York City’s Democrat Mayor following his election in 1978, before losing his final vote race in 1989.

Koch became a regular commentator on TV and radio shows, writing movie reviews and even serving as a TV judge on The People’s Court in the 1990s. He suffered numerous health problems over the years, including a stroke while he was in office, a heart attack and bypass surgery, and he was in and out of hospital several times in the weeks before his death.

His funeral will take place in New York on Monday.
