Whether Beyonce’s highly praised rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” was lip-synced or not is unclear, but two other performers during President Obama’s Inauguration want the world to know that they weren’t faking the funk on the steps of the US Capitol.
Former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson performed “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” before Beyonce, and her rep let everyone know she did not lip-sync. “Kelly did sing live!” the rep said.
Folk legend James Taylor, who sang “America the Beautiful,” also chose to sing live. “He was playing and singing live,” his rep said.
The Marine Band that backed Beyonce admitted it faked its performance, but placed the blame on Beyonce in the following statement:
“The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) requested that the Marine Band accompany Beyonce Knowles-Carter in the performance of the Star-Spangled Banner at the 2013 Inaugural Ceremony. However, there was no opportunity for Ms. Knowles-Carter to rehearse with the Marine Band before the Inauguration so it was determined that a live performance by the band was ill-advised for such a high-profile event,” Capt. Gregory A. Wolf said in a statement.
A rep for the Marine Band has backed off original claims that B lip-synced, saying, “Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter’s vocal performance, no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded.”
