Bobbi Kristina Brown’s pain is exposed for all too see during this often times uncomfortable new reality show on Lifetime called The Houstons: On Our Own. The point of the reality series is to show how Whitney’s family is coping since her death last February, but the show is raising eyebrows due to its deeply personal intrusion into the grieving family’s lives.

The show picks up three months after Whitney’s tragic death and it follows Whitney’s brother Gary, his wife Pat (who was also Whitney’s manager), their teenage daughter Rayah, and Whitney’s mother, Cissy. But of course the focus of the show centers on Bobbi Kristina and her controversial relationship with her boyfriend, Nick Gordon. Nick was taken in and raised by Whitney since he was twelve years old and apparently their relationship turned romantic after Whitney’s passing.
The show starts off with a bang showing Bobbi Kristina alternately drinking cocktails, blowing off meetings, breaking down and sobbing at her first visit to her mother’s grave site this past Mother’s Day, and defiantly defending her relationship with Nick to her disapproving family. We even get to go along to the tattoo parlor and watch her and Nick get matching tattoos honoring “their” late mother while the rest of the family is out of town. In an interview on camera, Bobbi Kristina explains, “We were best friends long, long ago, and now I am in love with him.” She adds, “It was never anything that these people are saying that it was incest. None of that. You guys can take my word for it.”

While you get the sense that there are a lot of people who love Bobbi Kristina, it’s clear that no one knows quite what to do to tame this poor girl and stop this likely train wreck. But she herself has hope. Just this week Bobbi Kristina tweeted, “very beautiful fall evening @nickgordon. I know we’ll make it through, why? Don’t ask…She just told me RIP Mommy, OhHowIMissU!Xxo.”
The Houstons: On Our Owns airs on Lifetime Wednesdays at 9 p.m.
