It was John Travolta’s idea to reunite with Olivia Newton-John after 30 years and do a holiday album together, RumorFix has learned.
“Olivia texted me that our single, ‘You’re the One That I Want,’ just became the best-selling duet of all time,” said Travolta, who was sitting around the Christmas table in Maine with his family at the time. “And I thought to myself, ‘Wouldn’t people want to hear us do other songs?’ and immediately came up with the idea of doing a holiday album together.
Olivia says, “My contribution was the suggestion we donate the proceeds to our charities. From there, it all just fell into place and worked out amazingly well. Our intention was so pure; it was easy for all these people to agree to sing on it because these were such good causes.”
Travolta and Newton-John will donate the artist proceeds from This Christmas equally to their respective charities, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Center in Melbourne, Australia, and the Jett Travolta Foundation, established in the name of his late son.
“What could be a more important purpose for this album at that time of year?” says Travolta. “Once we made that decision, the magic began to happen. Everyone we asked said yes.”
The duo sings “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” (with its honking Kenny G tenor sax solo) and “The Christmas Song,” “Auld Lang Syne” and “Christmas Time Is Here.” All of the songs were done in one take.
Olivia says, “John sounds so wonderful. I think people are going to be surprised what a great crooner he is after hearing this album.”
There are other cameos on the album from Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, James Taylor and Chick Corea.
The album goes on sale in November.
