There’s a rumor going around that hip-hop mogul Jay-Z only owns 1/15 of one percent of the Brooklyn Nets. It’s quite the accusation considering the rapper is credited with moving the Nets from New Jersey to the brand new Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn, his hometown.
Jay has also referenced his stake in the team in numerous records, and is often spotted sitting court side at the games. Frustrated with people trying to steal his shine, the rapper addressed the percentage rumor during Sunday and Monday night performances at Barclays.
“First of all, I don’t know where they get that number from … but it’s not about me, it’s about ya’ll,” the rapper explained on Sunday night before tearing into a rocked out version of “99 Problems.”
“It doesn’t matter what percentage,” he continued on Monday. “The story is that a black kid from a single parent house made it from [the Marcy Projects] about six minutes away from here. So the fact that I have any ownership in this franchise is fucking amazing. The fact that I have any ownership in this venue is f*cking amazing. Don’t let them diminish your accomplishment or dim your shine. It’s f*cking amazing.”
While Jay didn’t confirm if the rumor was true or not, it’s the first time he’s spoken out about it. And even if it is true, he has a point: it is quite the accomplishment.
