Kicking off with an opening skit starring her former Today co-host Matt Lauer, Katie Couric made her mark in daytime television with the launch of Katie on Monday.
Wearing a blue dress (not seen above) and standing on a set that looks something like Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey’s sets had a love child, Katie welcomed audiences into her world. “I’m so thrilled that today is finally here … In many ways, this is a new beginning for me,” Katie told the crowd.
The mother of two was joined in the audience by her 16 and 21 year old daughters, as well as her mother. And while her husband passed away over a decade ago, Katie revealed that she’s still single, but joked that she’s on the market if George Clooney is interested.
The TV host’s first guest was Weight Watcher spokeswoman, Jessica Simpson. Wearing slimming black attire, the Texas girl talked weight loss and her baby.
“I’ve just had a lot of pressure on me to lose the baby weight … Today was one of my goals, just getting here comfortable and being comfortable in this beautiful dress,” she explained. Jess says that while pregnant with her first child, she didn’t hold back on eating because she thought the weight would just drop off.
“It is definitely a challenge. I think during pregnancy I didn’t really think about it … All the weight did not come off with the baby,” she added.
The Fashion Star star wouldn’t reveal just how much weight she’s lost on the Weight Watcher plan, but says she’s been able to workout and focus on losing weight because of the incredible job her fiance Eric Johnson is doing. ”He is an incredible father. He can do everything. He can change every diaper and he can have her all day long and not really stress about it.”
Still, Jessica and Eric, who were rumored to be tying the knot later this year, have not set a wedding date. “It won’t be this year. We thought we would have time to plan a wedding but Maxwell has taken up all of our time.”
Sheryl Crow, who sang Katie’s theme song, was also on the show.
