An impromptu comedy show by Dave Chappelle ended abruptly after the comedian lost control of his show because of hecklers. Everything went down on Tuesday night in Austin, Texas where Chappelle was performing at the Paramount Theater.

According to a witness, Chappelle was onstage when some people in the crowd began interrupting him. Instead of having security remove the unruly people, Chappelle reportedly encouraged them to continue being rude.
The Paramount Theater explained the entire ordeal on their Facebook Page, writing:
“Here’s why we didn’t run up and down our 1,200+ seat venue throwing people out: the performer was engaging and encouraging the crowd. When security was escorting a patron out that had been recording the show, Dave Chappelle said he should stay. He then chose to respond and include the audience in his show. This created a domino effect of audience ‘participation.’ While we may not be in agreement with the choice, it was the artist’s choice to interact with the audience that we had to ultimately respect.”
Chappelle performed in Dallas just days before without any incident.
