“When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio, I said that sounds very familiar. It feels reductive,” Madonna told 20/20 earlier this year. Fast forward to this weekend, and it’s very clear just how familiar Lady Gaga’s song sounds to one very old Madonna classic.
During a dress rehearsal in Tel Aviv for her upcoming world tour, Madonna covered Lady Gaga’s 2011 singe “Born This Way,” fusing it with her own 1989 track, “Express Yourself.” Not surprisingly, the fusion of the two tracks was as easy on the ears as one could imagine proving Madonna’s point
Typically when someone covers another artist’s music, it’s seen as a tribute, but that doesn’t appear to be one of those situations.
“I certainly think [Gaga] references me a lot in her work. Sometimes I think it’s amusing and flattering and well done. It’s a statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it … There’s a lot of ways to look at it. I can’t really be annoyed by it because, obviously, I’ve influenced her.”
Oh, Madge! What an eloquent jab.
Anyway, what do you think? Is Madonna poking fun at Gaga or playing nice by covering the song?
