Junior Seau’s 911 Tape — It Shouldn’t Be Broadcast

Posted on May 4th, 2012 at 2:03 pm
True

I just heard the most unsettling 911 audiotape.

Junior Seau’s girlfriend was calling for help on Wednesday after NFL great Junior Seau took his own life. We at RumorFix have made a decision that streaming this audio does not serve in the public’s interest — it only exploits this poor woman’s grief and is morbid.

It’s very painful to hear the audio — the woman is crying uncontrollably. We believe that she should be able to retain her dignity and not be blasted all over the media.

The broadcast of the audio by TMZ brings up an on-going controversy — should broadcasting 911 calls be banned?

Releasing 911 tapes is protected by the California Public Records Act. The main reason: public accountability. But more than a dozen states have banned the release of the audio and there is a move to include California in the ban.

We are not advocating censorship — we are simply advocating journalistic responsibility. We are asking that journalists think twice before releasing audio — we at RumorFix have taken our own advice. We thought twice and decided in this case, we are not broadcasting the audio.

Our sympathy goes out to Junior’s girlfriend, his mother and his three children who have suffered a tremendous loss.

I agree.  911 calls are usually very upsetting to the person doing the calling.  It’s bad enough it happened without making it public.

Our sympathy does go out to the Seau family, I believe is simply a specious statement. Very few organizations have “sympathy,” for anything. It is as empty a statement as “our thoughts and prayers……” go out. It means nothing.
On the other hand, it is a reflection of good taste and common sense not to rebroadcast the 911 call. But, don’t pat yourselves on the back. You’ve shown common decency, not sympathy.

Thank you for your opinion joe blow.

Sadly your choice not to broadcast it is the exception not the rule.  As an advocate for access to information laws and accountable, transparent government, I fail to see how broadcasting a 911 call in mainstream media supports accountability.  It is tabloid journalism and shows a lack of respect for human dignity. While these recordings may have their place in a court of law, they should be exempted from general access.   California should follow suit.

They should be banned!! Not just for famous but for all people who don’t require hearing it ( like investigating police or such if a homicide ect.. In involved ).

I remember poor Joaquin phoenix’s 911 aired on tv and all I could think was, “really? The guy is pouring out his most primal pleas for help for a loved one, why show it?’

Consider one of your family members having an emergency then having to be brought back to that very moment you see or hear it played over and over by the media!

TMZ show have shown some respect….sad :-(
