John Mayer is denying a rumor that his latest single “Shadow Days” is about ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston. An “unnamed source” recently made the claim to a tabloid, and John was asked about it during an interview with CNN to promote his new album, Born & Raised.
“It’s weird because I’ve never told anybody what a song is about, literally,” the seven-time Grammy winner explains. “There’s no sources because no one ever asked! At no time writing the song did the engineer say, ‘What’s that about?’ At no time did (producer) Don Was look at me and say, ‘Hey Johnny, what’s that song about?’”

“I think people are under the impression that I sit down with a pen, and I stare off at the wall and I say, ‘Someone’s going to get it.’ And that’s not how songwriting works,” Mayer adds.
One listen to the lyrics and it’s not hard to see the song isn’t about a woman, but rather John’s growth as a man. “I’m a good man/With a good heart/Had a tough time/Got a rough start/But I finally learned to let it go.”
Not exactly a confessional about lost love.
John’s Born & Raised is in stores now.
