In a refreshingly honest tribute to her son Saturday night At the Los Angeles GLAAD Media Awards, Cher revealed, “I was so nervous, because my pronouns for my child just jump all over the f**king place.”
At different times during her speech, the gay icon used the pronoun “he” and when talking about Chaz Bono’s childhood, Cher referred to him as “she.” “It’s 42 years,” she explained about her difficulty replacing “she” with “he.”
Cher’s appearance was a surprise to the crowd, but a bigger surprise to Chaz. The diva joined Bono’s stepmother, Rep. Mary Bono Mack, whom Cher called “the only good Republican in the world.”
They presented Chaz with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.
Wearing a crazy wig, Cher praised her son, “I’m here because Chaz has the most courage of almost anyone I know. The other day I was having a big meltdown (like you do) and Chaz said, ‘Are you going to come to the [GLAAD event],’ and I went ‘Chaz, you know, I’m not doing well right now’ and…he texted me and said ‘I turned into a very understanding, smart man and you can call on me.’ And it made me feel so good, like I could lean on someone. It touched my heart.” Addressing Bono directly, Cher said, “You are the most courageous person I know and you really deserve this award, so come up and get this award!”
